Five ways to check
- Look at your utility bill. A sewer charge means you're on sewer.
- Do you have a private well? If yes, you're almost certainly on septic.
- Look for a round or square lid, or a green or concrete cover, in the yard.
- Check your home inspection or purchase paperwork.
- Ask your county health authority for septic records on your address.
Where septic is common
In Washoe County, septic is common in Spanish Springs, Cold Springs, Lemmon Valley, Golden Valley, Washoe Valley, Palomino Valley, and south Reno foothills. In Carson Valley, Johnson Lane, Ruhenstroth, and most rural lots. In Lyon County, Dayton, Mound House, Silver Springs, and Stagecoach.
Inside the Lake Tahoe Basin?
Homes inside the Tahoe Basin are on sewer. Septic was phased out there decades ago to protect the lake.
