Why septic freezes

Septic systems freeze when water sits still in shallow lines, when snow cover is packed down by cars or foot traffic, or when a house sits empty. Second homes and rentals are most at risk.

Winter checklist

  • Pump in fall, not January.
  • Don't drive, park, or plow over the tank or drainfield.
  • Let snow sit on the drainfield. It insulates.
  • Fix running toilets and dripping faucets that trickle cold water into lines.
  • Mark the lids with a tall stake so they can be found under snow.
  • If you leave for weeks, have someone run water daily.

If it freezes

Don't use antifreeze or salt in the system, and don't build a fire over the tank. Call a pro. Line jetting with warm water or adding heat tape may be needed.
